INTO THE FOREST

The always politically-conscious Emanuel Botelho is one of my dearest friends from Portugal and I am super stoked he is blessing us with some new instrumental tunes under the moniker Nihilist Assault Group. Emanuel explores instrumental pop like no other, melding guitars and melodies together that seem to soundtrack ones’ journey through a wandering path into a mystical forest of wonder and mystery. Emanuel is releasing his Russian-American EP through Amdiscs and MPD October 3rd, be sure to get it there when it drops. This EP will also include the 9/11 Responder’s Bill track that was premiered on my Compilation for World Hunger, which was under a different moniker then.

EARLY MORNING SWELLS

It seems pretty easy to let your mind wander and daydream with the psychedelic surf-inspired instrumentals that Portugals’ Branches produces. The astral sounds surround you thanks to the woozy guitar of which it is composed of, equally giving it a laid-back surf aesthetic. Branches were a recommendation from my Portuguese friend Johnny back in April of 2010. Pedro has since found his way onto Ian Nelsons’ Triple You Tapes Summer Sampler and has been surfing across the internets’ blogs. Be sure to check out his equally awesome jam titled Vamos which found its’ way onto Friendship Bracelet not too long ago.

POACHED

Hosannas is a Portland, Oregon band whose music is built upon toned guitars with an emotional avant pop edge. The below video, shot and directed by Guy Wagner, shows the delicate egg traveling carefully throughout in the beginning, only to be mishandled, abused, and crushed toward the end. The climatic ending to the track seems to go hand in hand with the ultimate destruction of the egg, hinting that the egg may be a symbol for a man or a woman’s lovelorn heart. The director uses the visual torture of the egg to represent ones’ troubles with love and the rollercoaster ride it can bring one upon.

LATE NITE

Daniel Lopatin and Joel Ford delve deep into R&B-based electronic synth with their newest irresistible jam titled Shadows In Bloom, with samples hinting at 80s and early 90s nostalgia. This newest GAMES track seems appropriate for late night cruises through Los Angeles, and is my personal favorite of theirs so far. Be sure to cop their 12” That We Can Play dropping on Hippos In Tanks November 2nd, and don’t forget to give their above-linked tumblr a once over every once in a while.

INFINITE COLOR

Ian has recently started shooting for Pitchfork, here’s the first of many videos of his that will be making its’ way onto Pitchforks’ Tunnelvision. This latest installment of Tunnelvision features indie new agers Prince Rama, and be sure to pick up their latest release Shadow Temple from Paw Tracks. Michael was not available to play this show, due to a complication with the police.

PROVIDENCE LOVE AND DREAM SHAKES

There are a lot of videos that float around the net in order to promote an artists’ track, but how many of them do you remember? Half the time they are just these boring repetitious kaleidoscopic videos that are made to be a literal hint that the music is ‘psychedelic’ and of ‘trippy nature’. It’s nice to see someone have a sense of humor to come along and make a totally awesome video featuring Barney, 40s, and choreographed dancing to an instrumental lo-fi track filled with fuzzy guitars. Thanks, Cool World.

THE MYSTERY THAT LIES BENEATH

The process of creating the diamond takes millions upon millions of years, and is derived from none other than the unattractive carbon-based coal. Buried deep beneath the earths’ crust, it takes millions of years for coal just to turn into its’ second phase, graphite. Yes, the graphite in your pencil could have been a diamond if it had stayed below the earths’ surface for a few more million years. It is normal for coal to go under the elements that the earth dishes out 100 miles below our surface, but it is the variation in high temperatures, pressures and geological processes, that are responsible for creating the diamond. Once formed, the diamond takes anywhere from 2000-3000 years to be pushed up to the surface, using hot magma as its’ vehicle to get there.

It’s kind of surreal, when you think about the diamond your loved one might own is older than many of the civilizations that exist today. Additionally, it’s fairly interesting that its’ original amorphous carbon-based form, coal, is formed out of decomposed plant and animal material, which have been traveling through the earths’ layers for millions of years. Essentially, the diamond you own is a piece of the earth, and representative of the animals and plants that had once roamed and populated the earths’ surface.

Much like a diamond, Blackbirds Blackbirds’ music seems to shine like a glittering gemstone, Mikey S. emulating the glo-fi genre like no other. His track Pure is the soundtrack for the creation of diamonds, the earthy tribal drums bring you to the caves where the diamonds are mined from the kimberlite veins. The heavenly, cut up vocal wails symbolize a diamonds’ travel from the mines to a jeweler’s hands. This diamond is then sold to the hopeful, average man, typically on the verge of embarking on a new phase in his life. Below, is the music video for Pure, a kaleidoscope adventure into a females’ heart. Be sure to pre-order Mikeys’ super comprehensive debut cassette tape on Wonder Beard Tapes, with artwork done by the talented collage artists and blogger Jheri Evans.

WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES TWELVE

Gentle synth tones swim around the vocals of Exact Indexs’ track Swimming Shark, where the bass line remains prominent throughout. This track presents the tones and mood of the early morning hours, as well as the feeling felt when one is lost and alone in a foreign place, trying to find the meaning of the world that surrounds her. Walking the earth as if everyone else was frozen in time, this human embarks on a journey into the night exploring herself and the abnormalities of the world that was once full of life; now frozen.

A VENTURE INTO MODERN PSYCHEDELIA

Cole Furlows’ project Dead Gaze has a new release on Firetalk Records showcasing his vocal-drowned psychedelic garage pop. Take Me Home Or I Die Alone features an irresistably catchy synth-generated chorus while his guitar waltzes around his vocals. The B-side, titled Emanuel Can’t Come Close Enough lacks the pulsating energy of Coles’ usual tracks, and demonstrates a more gentle approach to the genre that Cole constructs so well, ultimately resulting in a very solid 7”. It’s limited to 300 copies, you can pre-order it here.

VHS VIBES

I was sent this extremely rad video not too long ago and it has been sitting in my inbox melting everything else around it. I must tap my hat to Shelly Carmel for her stunning visual and directorial work, VHS tape vibes galore.

Salty Air is a hip-hop based glo-fi track by J. Viewz that models summer days and rad times. Summer has pretty much come to an end, and this video will most likely be the last hit of nostalgia we’ll have to remember us of our past summer. This brooklyn-based band is doing something a bit different than the average artist, by purchasing a membership to their Work In Progress album, you get the tracks as they come along plus some extras.

You can get this mp3 for free by simply tweeting or posting this track to your facebook, which can be done here.

BIRTHDAY JAMS

I’ve been seriously missing fellow vegan Sam Yager while he has been off on his west coast tour, his track Van Hands has been on repeat ever since he sent it to me over the summer, and so has his track JNCO Genius which was used on my sold out charity compilation for World Hunger. Chicago-based Nitetrotter has provided us with some super rad laid-back jams that swim around modern psychedelia. While your at it, you can still grab his cassette tape titled Hawaiian Punch Wave from Impose Magazine here.

FRIENDS FOREVER

It’s quite apparent that I enamor photography, as I have made the art form a part of every post I make on Salad Fork. Below, is a video of a Ryan McGinley directed video of Girls and the Smith Westerns at the Pitchfork music festival. It’d be hard for me not to make this one-off post as both of my worlds seem to collide in this one video.

Here’s what Ryan had to say:

“Smith Westerns and Girls are two of my favorite bands right now. I first saw Smith Westerns play at this restaurant in a weird little mall in Chinatown, and there were only about five people there. I liked how their hair was always covering their eyes and you could barely see their faces. They were so cute; it was almost like watching a high school band. Smith Westerns went on tour with a band called Girls who I immediately fell in love with, so much so that I sent the singer-songwriter Chris Owens my last photography book along with a fan letter. They covered their entire stage with flowers––I loved that. Their song “Solitude” speaks to me more than any other song I can think of right now. I caught up with both bands at the Pitchfork festival to document their performances and be a fly on the wall the whole weekend. That’s pretty much my idea of a perfect vacation. And it was.”

A DIFFERENT PLACE, A DIFFERENT TIME

It’s kind of hard not to post a track that Emily Reo sends you with the amount of cuteness that surrounds her email. Earlier today, Emily sent word of a new Blackbird Blackbird song that was created using her voice as a sample. The music, in itself, emanates an illustrious beauty that is hard for anyone to ignore. I can most nearly represent my feelings for this track as entering into a dream world. When entering your subconscious, you escape the real world and venture into what seems to be a whole new universe, sometimes partially based on your experiences had. The details are forgotten when you awake, they fade- but the feeling remains and travels with you throughout the day.

MIAMI VIBES

I’ve appreciated Toro Y Mois’ LP Causers Of This as a great piece of production and using texture to make his songs catchy more than his vocals. I stumbled upon Toro Y Mois’ side project, Les Sins, through his myspace never knowing that it was his side-project until today. I remember listening to some pretty decent music while looking at these really cool retro miami-vibe photos. I feel like Chaz’s talents in the production of music surpasses his live performances, which is why I am very much into his ‘dance house’ based side-project, and super stoked it’s getting a proper 12” single release on Carpark November 9th.

AIN'T NOBODY

Hauntingly amazing reworking of Ain’t Nobody (a song by British pop singer Clare Maguire), Memory Tapes’ takes the song and adds some intense retro 80s vibes, which seem to meld seamlessly well with Clare Maguires’ vocals. This re-edit is so flawless, Maybe Clare should become a permanent member of Memory Tapes.

UP THE PUNKS

I first posted about Twin Shadow with this completely awesome throwback style video for Slow, in which I stated it was my favorite videos of the year. This time around, Salad Fork homie Jamie Harley curated a video for Twin Shadows’ track Castles In The Snow using some super rad vintage footage of punks, and as always, Jamie’s visual collages do not disappoint.

FORGET IT, JAKE, IT'S CHINATOWN

Roman Polanski’s Chinatown is one of my favorite film noir films. The film, a psychological crime drama, left me fully satisfied in awe and wonder. I received the utmost enjoyment while I watched the creatively directed film and its’ characters become haunted by demons from their past. While that may sound a bit twisted, the enjoyment was felt because of the amount of meaning and symbols in the film, something modern film nowadays seems to generally lack.

As a tribute for their appreciation for dark, mysterious, psychological crime dramas, Irelands’ Low Sea created a video for their track Berlin off of their EP The Light, which dropped today on Lefse.

ILL CONCEIVED DECISIONS

I recently pre-ordered Summer Camps’ Round The Moon 7” through a British record store on eBay, because it had sold out so quickly online through their labels’ website.

Summer Camps’ nostalgia-filled pop gem Veronica Sawyer is a collage of pop sounds that meld together into a beautifully written track. The lyrics seem to hint at the growing pains of teenagers, the innocence that comes along with venturing through life and love. Veronica Sawyer is off of their Young EP, a CD available from Moshi Moshi Records that is a compilation of all the tracks they’ve released thus far. The whole EP is utterly irresistable, and definitely one worth picking up, unless you are not a believer in the idea of the compact disc, in which you can still download in mp3 form.

VARIOUS DEFICIENCIES, VOL. I

Newer-to-the game Blackburn Recordings dropped a very nice 17 track compilation not too long ago, featuring exclusive tracks from Salad Fork favorites such as Cloud Nothings, Sleep Over, and Big Troubles, among others. You can still download this mix, for free, here and now, you can purchase it on a 150-run cassette tape featuring art by Molly Smith. Blackburn also has a Sore Eros 7” up for sale called Taal Compass, be sure to pick that up if your into mellowed out lo-fi folk. Below is one of my favorite tracks from this compilation, Sultans’ stunning There Goes My Girl, the attractive guitar riffs and soothing vocals will melt your heart into magma.
