SAINT NOTHING

Saint Nothing is a track off of Daniel Rossen’s upcoming EP Silent Hour / Golden Mile, which is coming out March 19 on Warp. Rossen had this to say about the EP:

“When you spend so much time touring around, you can lose perspective on what you’re trying to do. All the sudden, I had no idea what to do or what to make or anything…These songs were a way for me to figure that out again, getting my legs back.”

Saint Nothing reminds me of the gentle and haunting spookiness of “Yellow House”. When I listen to that record I always think of old houses and the memories that people attach to the places they live (i.e. visiting my grandmother’s house and watching myself as an 8-year old eating pasta around the dining table every sunday). It’s a personal opinion of mine that the best records allow one to think or reminisce about something unique that no other material object (not only records) is capable of doing - and “Yellow House” did that for me. Therefore, I am really excited about this EP.

THE OWLS

I’ve always envisioned Grouper’s music to be perfect for scoring a film, and this dream of mine is finally coming true. I think it’d be safe to say the trailor for Weston Currie’s film The Perception of Moving Targets (scheduled to screen at this year’s Sundance Film Festival) emanates Twin Peaks vibes - creating a dark, ambient aesthetic for a small suburban town. According to Pitchfork Liz Harris scored the entire film and will include previously released material from A I A and Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill, along with some new material.

LITTLE FOOT

Little Foot is the project of Providence local Erica Sutherland. The two tracks she has uploaded on her soundcloud are simply guitar and her vocals (A Sad Love Song From Someone Else has got her roommate Pat on guitar) - both are soothing, magical pieces of music.

STREET TEAM

I’ve honestly never seen a funnier music video - watch the Real Estate Street Team capture Jake Fogelnest and try to force people to listen to Real Estate on the streets.

WANT TO BE MY STUDY BUDDY

New jam from the homies Surf Club off of their upcoming EP titled Young Love, which drops on February 14th. The last ~30 seconds of this track is some seriously epic shred, and the sound is pretty much in tune to the style we’ve heard previously.

DANDAAK HOUSE MUSIC

I remember the first time I stumbled upon house music was right before my mom was about to teach a STEP aerobics class at a gym right on the border of Johnston, RI (yeah, that’s where Pauly D is from). This gym in particular didn’t have a place for kids to play so I would usually just lift the 5 pound weights or play Pokemon on my gameboy color. I always kept close to where my mom would teach her classes though, and would sometimes peek in at her class. I remember thinking it was weird people would listen to this strange music that shared the same name as a place that people live in to hop up and down on a step.

Dandaak brings back memories of those times I spent at 44 Fitness and all of the house music I listened to. Now, only if I can find those tapes…

STRAIGHT STRAIGHT CHILLIN DAWGS

To be totally honest I’m pretty fed-up with the “chillwave” genre. Most would argue those washed out and toro y moi records started the whole thing. While I enjoy those records I feel as though the average spin-offs that I see on the internet are so chill it’s just plain cheesy. I’ve been really getting into a couple of tracks that West Palm Beach, FL’s Sumsun has posted on his soundcloud, and these tracks border the chillwave genre. The difference between Sumsun and your average internet chillwaver is he does not saturate his tracks with ambience and reverb - his tracks have beats I can really get into. THANKS FOR KEEPIN IT REAL DUDE.

MOM’S CASSETTE TAPES, PT. II: CHAKA KHAN/THE REMIX PROJECT

It feels like it’s been forever since I posted up part I of my mom’s cassette tape mix series. But hey, being in school during the fall and spring make it hard for me to find time to do this stuff. For those of you that don’t remember I inherited my mom’s tape collection from her 80’s/90’s days of teaching STEP aerobics, dance, and other speciality classes. This tape isn’t too far off from what we heard from MEGASTEP, it’s got a similar vibe but feels more complete than the relatively short MEGASTEP excerpt. Download/stream the 38-minute mix below.
