In Case You Missed It: Larry Gus’ Stitches

Larry Gus is Panagiotis Melidis. He is from Greece and makes some really cool hip-hop based instrumentals. It’s really difficult to categorize this music specifically, because there are so many different sounds that compose it. The track Little Room has an urban aesthetic to it, while Cooking As A Habit totally has a 70s soul vibe. Larrys’ Stitches has populated my last.fm account this week because of the fact that all of the songs sound different yet meld together to form a cohesive album. The best comparison I can make to Larrys’ Stitches is Washed Outs’ Fantastic Symphony Mix that premiered on the internet a while ago. You can test it out via Soundcloud below.

Washed Out: Belong [Live at Mercury Lounge]+New Track: Untitled

Washed Out played a show with a backing band last night at Mercury Lounge, a much different set up than his debut show in NYC when it was just Ernest. If you are in New York, you can catch him again tonight, Mercury Lounge reports a few tickets just became avaliable. Watch him play my favorite song of his off of the High Times cassette below:

Mexican Summer Future Releases

Anyone remember The Mayfair Set? If you were lucky enough to catch the Woodsist/Captured Tracks Festival this past summer, you might have seen their only show, with Dee Dee from The Dum Dum Girls being from California and ‘Mr. Blank Dog’ being from Brooklyn, and all. I remember Already Warm being one of my most played songs of the summer. Any way, just checking out some of Mexican Summers’ future releases and noticed ‘The Mayfair Set’ on the list. Double checked The Mayfair Set’s myspace, and sure enough: ‘working on the LP’.

In other Mexican Summer news, also noticed future releases from Washed Out (got an email from Ernest Greene himself saying to watch for near-future releases from Lee Weather and Washed Out), Campfires, and Real Estate are planned. Oh boy. Can’t wait to pay some exorbitant amount of money for a Mexican Summer LP/EP that I know I’ll have to own. I also kind of wonder what bands feel like when they get a deal from Mexican Summer. I mean, their artist line-up is so solid…

Lee Weather - I Saw Eternity The Other Night

Another chill song. Another chill project/alter-ego of Washed Out’s Ernest Greene. It’s got this feeling of a thick sounding AM-radio station. This song gives me the feeling of a hazy-summer-love.

I almost forgot that this was on the “Is It Over?” mixtape from Ears of the Beholder.

What’s Next For Chillwave: Big Spider’s Back

This guy is talented. Just when you thought Chillwave was dead, Big Spider’s Back gives you catchy, whirling drones and beats with occasional wailing vocals over them. What’s even better is that he knows how to preform his music live, which has shown to be difficult with artists such as Ernest Greene to do, admitting his music wasn’t made to be preformed (same with memory cassette/tapes). He’s a Seattle based band, and has been playing shows with none other than Universal Studios Florida, so maybe you’ve seen him play.
